Meet the Board of Directors & Staff

President:  Doug Marter
Doug is the Manager of Planning and Development for Calgary Parks with the City of Calgary. He oversees Parks Open Space and Development Approvals, Parks Capital Development, and the Enmax Legacy Park Program. Prior to his current position, Doug was the Manager of Parks Operations North for Calgary Parks. Doug has also worked with Palliser Environs, a design and build landscape construction firm with offices across Canada and the United States. Doug is highly regarded in his field, and regularly presents at local, national and international conferences.

Vice-President:  Liliana Bozic M.Sc., P.Eng.
Liliana is a watershed engineer with the City of Calgary Water Resources. She is a founding member of the ALIDP and helped develop the Partnership’s Mission, Terms of Reference, Strategic Action Plan and budget, and was instrumental in promoting the Partnership to the broad stakeholder base. She also initiated the inter-provincial partnership with BC and Ontario whose goal is to further the development of appropriate design tools and act as a knowledge base and support network for the implementation of sustainable land development practices. Liliana is a champion of LID at the City of Calgary, and has been instrumental in developing the City’s integrated stormwater management strategies and guidelines.

Secretary: Bert van Duin M.Sc., P. Eng.
Bert has over 20 years of experience in the analysis, planning, design and management of urban and rural drainage, stormwater management and watershed management projects in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Ontario, with special interest in sustainability initiatives. Currently, he is Manager of Water Resources with Wardrop Engineering Inc. in Calgary, AB. Bert is one of the founding members of the Alberta Low Impact Development Partnership. He has spoken widely on stormwater quality, constructed wetlands, and rainwater harvesting and streams in urbanizing regions. As member of the Bow River Basin Council, he served on one of the Basin Advisory Committees for the South Saskatchewan River Basin Management Plan, and currently serves on the Legislation and Policy as well as the Knowledge, Data and Research Standing Committees. In addition to his daily duties he is also Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary and is involved with several working groups of the IWA/IAHR Joint Committee on Urban Drainage.

Treasurer:  Lyndon Gyurek. Ph. D. Environmental Engineering, P.Eng
Dr. Lyndon Gyurek is a professional engineer in Alberta and works for the City of Edmonton as a Supervisor of Environmental Planning in the Drainage Branch. He has been with the City since 2000 working on environmental related projects, including: watershed monitoring, aquatic field studies, total loadings assessment, regulatory affairs, sustainable land development practices, and public outreach/partnering. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta, the Alberta Underwater Council, and the American Water Works Association. In addition to being a founding member of the Alberta Low Impact Development Partnership, Lyndon also serves on a North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance technical advisory committee. Lyndon is active in amateur sport and triathlon.

Director:  Vanessa Higgins C. Tech, CEPIT
Vanessa Higgins is Watershed Specialist for Strathcona County Utilities in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Vanessa researches, analyzes and implements emerging technologies and opportunities in stormwater and water conservation management across the County. She also provides internal and external technical and operational support and expertise relative to stormwater & water conservation management. Vanessa enjoys using her creativity to produce communication materials specific to marketing strategies for water quality, conservation and management initiatives with the intent of modifying customer behaviours and develop programs for services provided by the department.

Director:  Lesley Kalmakoff, M.E.Des. , GIT
Lesley Kalmakoff is a Municipal Planner for the M.D. of RockyView, where she coordinates and provides planning advice at the early stages of development where innovative designs may be contemplated, reviews regulations, approvals processes, and the evolution of municipal policy. She also participates in creating and implementing management plans for several local watershed. Her recent masters project explored the link between land use planning and impacts to watershed resources, and investigated the application of Low Impact Development measures to a generic commercial/industrial site in the Nose Creek Watershed near Calgary. Lesley is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia, Canadian Institute of Planners (AACIP), and the Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA).

Director:  Judy Stewart, LL.B. LL.M. (Candidate)
Public at large

Judy is a teacher and lawyer, who currently owns her own law firm in Cochrane, Alberta, where she practices primarily in water law, municipal law, contracts and wills and estates. Judy defended her Master of Laws at the University of Calgary, where her thesis focused on municipal tools to protect wetlands and riparian lands from the impacts of development in Alberta's White Zone. As the former mayor and councillor in the Town of Cochrane for nine years, (3 as mayor and six as councillor) Judy was instrumental in creating Cochrane's first escarpment protection policy, waste management bylaw and water conservation policy, and recently assisted Cochrane in developing a wetlands and riparian lands protection policy, and land use bylaw provisions to protect environmentally significant lands. She is regularly called upon to present information about environmental reserves, municipal wetland and riparian land policy development, and municipal building development setbacks. Judy enjoys working with many community groups in land use planning and water management planning to protect sensitive environmental landscapes, especially wetlands and riparian lands.

ALIDP Coordinator:  Kim Kiel, B.Sc
Kim Kiel holds the title as the first and only employee of the ALIDP. Kim brings to this post over 10 years of leadership and outreach experience with a variety of environmental agencies, including Director of Education for the Southern Alberta chapter of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. Kim holds a B.Sc. in Environmental Science & Communications from the University of Alberta. She is an award-winning park interpreter who is known for integrating music and theatre into her dynamic public presentations. When she is not coordinating the activities and communications for the ALIDP, Kim can be found sharing her love of travel, nature and culture with her lovely toddler.
